Summer holiday season is over and that means visiting Hong Kong Asia for Fruit Logistic, always an exciting trip! This year’s edition took place from 6th to 8th September at Asia World Expo, the spectacular exhibition center near the Hong Kong International Airport in Lantau Island.
This show gathers producers from all over the world and it is the reference for Asian fruit importers. China is by far the leading importer in the region with more than 3.5 billion tonnes of fresh fruit imported in 2016, followed by Hong Kong (1.67 bn T), Japan (1.64 bn T), South Korea (0.76 bn T), Thailand (0.67 bn T) and Malaysia (0.56 bn T).
We visited the tradeshow to meet both international fruit producers and importers. Countries with a higher presence were: China, Italy, Egypt, USA, Spain, Australia and Turkey.
- Fresh products are increasingly traded globally. Consumers have almost all-year availability of main fruits.
- China is the powerhouse in the region but other markets are growing rapidly and should be taken into consideration when designing an internationalization strategy.
- Climate and plant pathogens such as citrus greening have massive consequences on global demand from specific countries. What a few years ago had a more domestic or regional impact, now has a global impact.
- Niche fruits have a bright future in mature markets that seek new products.
